About BlueHighways.org

BlueHighways.org is a website devoted to the celebration of travel on the two-lane highways of the United States.

On many of the older maps, the Interstate highways were designated in red or green, while the secondary roads... the older "US Highway" system, state-maintained highways, and county routes... were shown in blue. Interstates move you very quickly from one end of the country to the other. That is what they are designed to do. But in order to do so, they necessarily have to bypass much of the real country. They zip past towns, villages, farms, and just about anything of real interest. It's hard to see anything when you're cruising along at 75 miles per hour on a four, six, or eight lane superhighway.

Blue Highways trips have two basic "rules":

1. No traveling on Interstates. Some people more strictly adhere to this rule than others. Although construction or road changes sometimes make Interstate travel seem inevitable, with a little planning and a good map, almost any destination is possible without setting foot (or rather, wheel) on an Interstate.

2. No eating in fast-food or chain restaurants. Part of the charm of a true "Blue Highways" trip is eating at small cafes and restaurants...the ones usually frequented by locals. In fact, that's where most of the interaction you'll have with real people takes place. The characters, local legends, folklore, and history all seem to come out in conversations at local cafes.

BlueHighways.org exists as a free resource for people to exchange information about routes, sights, points of interest, local information, eating establishments, motels, gas stations...just about any information that might make someone's trip more practical or enjoyable. It's also a resource of sharing...whatever stories people want to tell about their own Blue Highways experiences.

Have fun!
